Christian Women's Job Corps
® - HOPE
offers a HANDUP to hurting women
by accompanying each woman where she is
and instructing her in life and job skills.

Through CWJC's life and job preparedness classes, mentoring, and celebrations,
she becomes more confident and empowered to set goals for herself
toward a bright and promising future.
No more defeat and failure,
rather a life of accomplishments and successes;
leading to freedom from the cycle of poverty for herself and her children.

Jeremiah 29:11 (The Message)
I know what I'm doing. I have it all planned out,
plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for.

Tameka's Story

I'm a 26 year old native of Wilmington, North Carolina. Looking to pursue an opportunity in Criminal Justice/ Criminology.  I'm also single mother of two Joshua (11 years), and Kamahra (4 years) old.  I find myself to be a supportive, loyal, and strong minded woman for JESUS, myself, my family, and community.

My mentor Phyllis Ellenberger is a woman of faith; who has been a real life angel and has come to the agreement with me to walk with me through the struggles of this world.  Thank you, Mrs. Phyllis!

Christian Women's Job Corps (CWJC) has helped me to find:

H
ealing in my walk with God, my family, as well within myself.

Opportunities to grow mentality.

Peace with God and my past.

Evolvement in building up myself to go out and sharing with others the love of God.

Experience of a Mentor

                By: Phyllis Ellenberg

Serving as a mentor for CWJC is a wonderful opportunity opened to me by God, my church (First Baptist of Wilmington), and Mary Ellen Bowman, Site Director.  My awareness of God’s love for his creations has been increased.  My awareness of the difficulties faced by women who are in poverty has increased and consequently I have been inspired by our women who hold on against all odds.  I have watched as my protégées have struggled with problems that would be debilitating if it were not for their faith and trust.  There are times of great joy and times of great sadness as you watch some young women leave having never met the God-given potential of their lives.

My own experience has been with a protégée who struggled with the death of a spouse, homelessness, and drug addiction.  Presently, I am working with a young woman who has faced homelessness and is a single parent of two young children (one has cerebral palsy).  She lost her job and is trying to complete a college degree.  She independently found a grant to help with homelessness, and never fails to assure her children are provided with supports to assure their success in education.  She has learned from making poor choices in the past and her favorite scripture is Proverbs 31. She is supportive towards others, finds her strength in Jesus, and loves her family and her community.  She meets you with an engaging smile and shows kindness to her peers.  She is an inspiration to me. I am ever amazed how she continues to “hang on” in the face of many difficult barriers.
